The English language requirement rules for most UK visas have significantly changed in 2026. This is a step towards allowing migrants who can integrate well in the UK and to help reduce net inward immigration in the UK.
This is a step towards allowing migrants who can integrate well in the UK and to help reduce net inward immigration in the UK.
Unless exempt, you must meet the latest English language requirement at a certain CEFR level for most UK visas, such as UK Family Visa or UK Work Visas, ILR (also known as ‘Settlement’), and British citizenship. Depending on the visa category and the type of permission you are applying for (entry clearance or permission to stay), you need to meet the specific CEFR level.
Importantly, the Home Office assesses your English language ability using the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), which measures your ability to read, write, listen, and speak English from basic to advanced levels.
Some UK visas require you to show your ability in only two components: speaking and listening abilities (for example, UK Family visa), while some visas require you to demonstrate your ability in all four components: reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the English language (for example, Skilled Worker or Student visas).
You can achieve level A1 and A2 under the CEFR by passing in speaking and listening abilities.
To achieve CEFR level B1 and B2, you will need to demonstrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities in the English language.
In this blog, we have discussed the latest English language requirements for UK visas in 2026.
After the change in English language requirements on 8 January 2026, you must be aware that to apply for a UK visa, you must meet the higher CEFR levels. Family members, job sponsors/employers, and education providers also need to understand the English language requirement.
Importantly, this is essential for you to fulfil the latest English language level requirements under the CEFR to avoid refusals or delays in your applications.
You must demonstrate your ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language to CEFR level B2 or above (except where your previous permission as a Skilled Worker was subject to a CEFR level B1 requirement).
You must demonstrate your ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language to CEFR level B2 or above.
When applying for a high-potential individual visa (seeking entry clearance to the UK or permission to stay here), you must demonstrate your ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language to CEFR level B2 or above.
You may be required to show your knowledge of the English language for this visa.
If so, you must demonstrate your ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language to the CEFR level B2 or above.
You will typically be required to show your proficiency in the English language when you apply as a Scale-up Worker.
If so, you must demonstrate your ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language to CEFR level B2 or above (except where your previous permission as a Scale Up worker in the UK was subject to a CEFR level B1 requirement).
If you are seeking entry clearance to the UK to join your family member, you must show your ability to speak and understand the English language at CEFR level A1 or above.
On the other hand, if you are applying to switch to the family route from inside the UK for the first time, you must meet CEFR level A1, and if you are applying to extend your permission to stay in the UK on this route, you must meet English language requirements at CEFR level A2.
If you are a family member of HM Armed Forces seeking entry clearance to the UK or permission to stay here, you must meet English language ability at CEFR level A1.
If you are seeking entry clearance to the UK or permission to stay here as a student to study a course that would lead to a qualification below a UK bachelor's degree level, you must meet the English language requirement at CEFR level B1.
If you are seeking entry clearance to the UK or permission to stay here as a student to study a course that would lead to a qualification at a UK bachelor's degree level or above, you must meet the English language requirement at CEFR level B2.
Even in 2026, certain UK worker or temporary worker visas other than those mentioned above do not require you to meet any English language requirements.
These visas include the following:

You do not need to prove your English language ability if you have already passed an English Language assessment test officially accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.
If you are a vet, you may have to show that you passed an English Language assessment test with the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons).
If you are applying as one of the following, you may be exempt from meeting the English language requirements in 2026:
A victim of domestic abuse/violence
A bereaved partner of a British citizen
An adult dependent relative
A person with discretionary leave
A Commonwealth citizen discharged from the UK Armed Forces
A refugee or a person with humanitarian protection
These are considered exceptional or compassionate cases.
When applying for a visa (mentioned above), which requires an applicant to meet English language requirements at specific CEFR levels, if you have already proved your English language ability under the CEFR in a previous successful visa application, you may not have to prove it again.
You do not have to prove your English language proficiency if you are a citizen/national of one of the following countries/territories:
Antigua and Barbuda
Australia
the Bahamas
Barbados
Belize
the British Overseas Territories
Canada

Grenada
Guyana

Latest English language requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Citizenship
If you are 18 or over and applying for ILR or British citizenship, you may be required to demonstrate your English language ability. You can do this usually by passing an approved English test at the B1, B2, C1, or C2 level, or by holding a degree that was taught or researched in English.
However, you will not need to meet this requirement if you are aged 65 or above, or if you have a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from taking the test. In addition, applicants who are nationals of recognised majority English-speaking countries (listed above in the blog) are also exempt from proving their English proficiency for ILR or citizenship applications.
From 8 January 2026, the English language level requirement under the CEFR has been increased for various UK visa routes. Importantly, family members, job employers/sponsors, education providers, and applicants applying on these routes should review and prepare for the latest English language requirements well in advance to avoid delay or refusals.
We can help businesses, families, education providers, and applicants to plan their application for entry clearance or permission to stay in accordance with the new English language requirements. Similarly, we can help applicants to ensure they meet the latest English language level criteria when applying for ILR or citizenship.
