Financial Requirement for UK Visitor Visa – What You Need to Know

Financial requirements are key eligibility criteria for almost all types of UK visas. For most visas, such as the UK skilled worker visa, the amount threshold is set, and the Home Office regularly updates it. On the other hand, for visas such as a UK visitor visa, there is no fixed amount of money required to meet the financial requirement.

As you know, a UK visitor visa allows you to visit the UK for a short period of up to 6 months. This means that you must leave the UK at the end of your visit. Likewise, there are other conditions you need to satisfy to be able to apply for a UK visitor visa. For example, you need to prove that you are a genuine visitor, you have strong ties to your home country, and you can financially support yourself and/or your dependent family members during your stay in the UK.

What is the UK Visitor Visa Financial Requirement?

A UK visitor visa allows you to come to the UK for tourism, meeting family and friends, short-term business activities, short-term study, receiving medical treatment, and other permitted activities. Irrespective of your purpose of visiting the UK, you or someone else on your behalf must cover your expenses during your stay in the UK. Expenses include your flight ticket to the UK and onward or return ticket at the end of your visit, your accommodation cost, food cost, travelling cost in the UK, etc.

You must prove your financial capability to meet the financial requirement and provide clear and transparent account of any debits and credits on your bank statements.

UK Visitor Visa Financial Requirement – What You Need to Know

In order to satisfy the UK visitor visa financial requirement, you will need to submit financial documents such as bank statements proving that you have sufficient funds available. These documents must clearly show that you have access to the funds.

In this article, we are going to discuss some key points you need to know about the UK visitor visa financial requirements.

1. There is no Specific Amount Required

Unlike most UK visas, you are not required to show a particular amount of money available with you for travelling and staying in the UK as a visitor. This includes expenses for your dependent family members coming with you.

2. Show Enough Funds Available with You

Even though there is no fixed amount of money you must have for a visitor visa, you still must show that you have enough money to cover the entire expenses of your trip without working or accessing public funds. This includes accommodation, food, and other expenses while in the UK, your flight ticket to the UK and return or inward journey ticket at the end of your visit.

If you cannot show enough funds required to meet your expenses, you may not be granted a UK standard visitor visa. However, if you are applying with a family member or are travelling to visit a family member in the UK, they can contribute towards your expenses and sponsor you. Regardless, whether you are sponsored or not you must provide a clear account of your financial standing in the country of your nationality or country of residence.

3. Sponsor Providing Support

Someone else can also pay to cover your expenses. If someone else (your sponsor) will cover your travel, flight tickets, accommodation, or maintenance, you should provide evidence showing:

  • What support your sponsor is providing, and whether it extends to any dependent family members.
  • How is your sponsor providing this support?
  • Your sponsor has enough funds to adequately support themselves and their dependents.
  • The relationship you share with your sponsor, for example, if they’re a family member or employer
  • Your sponsor is legally present in the UK (in case applicable), for example, if they have a British passport or a valid residence document.

4. If you are visiting the UK for Private Medical Treatment

If your purpose of travel to the UK is to receive private medical treatment, you must submit a letter written by a doctor or consultant. This letter must include the estimated cost of your treatment along with other details. You must provide evidence that you have financials to cover the costs of your treatment.

If you are applying to extend your visitor visa leave in the UK to receive private medical treatment, you must show that you’ve paid the treatment costs you’ve already received.

5. Evidence for Satisfying the Financial Requirement

The UKVI may ask you to provide documents such as the following to support your visit visa application financial requirement:

  • Bank statements covering at least six months or building society books that show the source and proof of funds.
  • Payslips.
  • A letter from your employer confirming your employment details, including your salary.
  • A letter of financial support from your sponsor, who is covering your expenses, together with proof of their finances, such as bank statements covering at least six months.
  • Your accommodation details in the UK. For example, a hotel booking confirmation, invitation letters from a UK resident (family or friends) confirming they will accommodate you.

The UKVI may refuse your visa if it believes that you do not have enough money to support yourself and/or dependents, or your financial documents are inconsistent. Therefore, seeking help from a lawyer can be a good choice. The lawyer will review your application and the relevant supporting documents to maximise the likelihood of the success of your application. They can also advise you on how much money you need to meet the financial requirements, taking into account your income and outgoings.

6. Documents that are Less Useful as Evidence

You should not use the following documents as evidence to meet the financial requirement for a UK visitor visa:

  • Bank statements older than 1 year
  • Travel Insurance
  • Credit Card statements

7. Visa Fees –

Depending on the maximum length of stay, you also must pay for the UK visitor visa fee.

  • The standard visitor visa fee for 6 months is £127.
  • The standard visitor visa fee for medical reasons for 11 months is £220.
  • The standard visitor visa fee for academics for 12 months is £220.
  • The 2-year long-term standard visitor visa fee is £475 for 6 months per visit.
  • The 5-year long-term standard visitor visa fee is £848 for 6 months per visit.
  • The 10-year long-term standard visitor visa fee is £1,059 for 6 months per visit.
